Cowboys Cheerleader from The Woodlands Makes Headlines

The Woodlands Texas native Kelsi Reich made national sports news yesterday.  Kelsi is a 4 year veteran on the Dallas Cowboy’s cheerleading squad and was caught in a somewhat of an awkward position during Sunday’s game.  She is currently dating Buffalo Bills wide receiver David Nelson who was in town yesterday to play the Cowbows.

During the second quarter, David caught Buffalo’s only touchdown pass of the day.  With all camera’s on him, he started running to the sidelines with the game ball.  Catching everyone off guard he hands the ball to one of the opposing team’s cheerleaders.  Most viewers at home did not understand that this was his girlfriend at first.  The look on Kelsi Reich’s face was quite uncomfortable.  It’s a good think the Cowboys thrashed the Bills by the end of the game or Reich might have been in trouble.

Kelsi graduated from The Woodlands College Park High School and has been on the Dallas Cowboy’s cheerleading squad for the past 4 years now.  Kelsis is not the only Woodlands Texas graduate to make the Cowboys squad.  Merideth Oden from The Woodlands High School was on last years roster, along with Conroe High School graduate Tia Williams.  I guess Conroe ISD has something else to brag about now.

Fire In The Woodlands

Black smoke can be seen from I-45 in The Woodlands TX  and Conroe area.  A 2 alarm fire broke out at Garden Ridge near Hwy 242 and I-45 around noon today and firefighters are still trying to contian it.

Officials have stated that customers were inside the store when the fire broke out but everyone was evacuated in time and no one was injured.  It has been reported that Wal-Mart and Kohls have also been evacuated due mostly to the heavy smoke in the area.

It hasn’t been determined yet how the fire broke out.  For now, it doesn’t seem to be drought related though.

The Woodlands High School Football 2011

High school football in The Woodlands TX is finally in full swing.  The Woodlands Highlanders have had a great squad over recent years and this year is no different.  They are currently ranked 28th in the state, according to TexasHSFootball.com, and are definitley the team to beat in District 14-5A.

The Highlanders district consists of 5 teams including College Park Caveliers, Conroe Tigers, Lufkin Panthers, and the Oak Ridge War Eagles.  All of their home games are played at the Woodforest Bank Stadium which opened in 2008 and holds up to 9,600 people.  The Highlanders share this field with Oak Ridge and College Park high schools, and when these teams have to play each other it becomes quite the atmosphere.  The Highlands play the College Park Caveliers on 10/28/2011 and this is usually a very exciting game to watch.

The Woodlands Highlanders opened the 2011 season last Friday night playing Prepa Tech out of Monterrey, Mexico with a win over them 56-32.  Cooper Woodyard lead the charge thowing 2 touchdown passes.  The Highlanders will not get to play Katy this year, this has been a great test for them in the past.  Katy is ranked 2nd in the state as of this writing and is always a contender for the state title.  It looks like The Woodlands Highlanders have a pretty easy schedule ahead of them as none of their opponents are currently ranked in the top 40.

If you’ve never made it out to a game before, you should try and catch one of their home games this season.  The Woodforest Bank Stadium is state of the art and a great venue to enjoy high schoo football.  Come out and support the team, this could be the year they win state, who knows?

The Woodlands Water Restrictions 2011

The Woodlands has issued water restrictions throughout the community.  The Woodlands Municipal Utility Districts and The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency have a drought contingency plan in place and have determined that The Woodlands is in “Severe Water Shortage Conditions”.  I guess it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to have seen this one coming.

Between residential and commercial properties, The Woodlands is consuming approximately 37 million gallons of water per day while the maximum capacity per day is only 55 million gallons per day.  It is estimated that the new water restrictions will save 5 million gallons per day.  The majority of these savings will come through less lawn irrigation.  The restrictions call for the following lawn watering schedule:

Odd Addresses on Wednesdays and Saturdays

Even Addresses on Thursdays and Sundays

Lawn irrigation is not the only thing that will change.  In an effort to drive home this message, local restaurants have been asked to serve water to patrons only on request.  Watering of vehicles in driveways is also on the don’t do list.  Residents are encouraged to do their watering before sunrise or after sunset to minimize water evaporation, but this is not mandatory.

There will be routine checks performed throughout the community to ensure that residents are abiding by the watering restrictions.  Violators will receive a warning but if too hard headed they can receive a find of up to $200 per violation.  Hopefully everyone will respect the problem that our community faces and do their part.

Def Leppard in The Woodlands Rescheduled for September

If you thought you missed the Def Leppard concert this weekend in The Woodlands, you might still get a chance to see them here.  The original date was set for this past Friday, July 22nd but was rescheduled for September 23rd.  The lead singer’s dad, Joe Elliot Senior, passed away from a heart attack and The Woodlands July concert date was canceled along with dates in Dallas, San Antonio, and New Orleans.

Moving Def Leppard to September might not be a bad thing.  Late September in The Woodlands TX usually provides much cooler temperatures in the evenings and is a great time of the year for this outdoor amphitheater.  The Woodlands concert schedule is loaded down with great shows in September, with more concerts than any other month out of the year.

There are still many great tickets available for the show including lawn seating and covered seating.  If you bought a ticket for the July 22nd concert, your ticket will still work for the September show.  You can buy them at ticketmaster or get them directly from the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion box office.  You can call the Pavilion at 281-363-3300.

Coal Burger The Woodlands

The Woodlands will be getting a new burger restaurant very soon.  Coal Burger is coming to The Woodlands Town Center and will be attached to the already existing Grimaldi’s Pizzeria.  If it’s anything near as good as the pizza concept, these burgers will be awesome.

Coal Burger is a fairly new concept that Grimaldi’s Pizzeria has launched.  Based in Scottsdale, there are two locations already open in Arizona.  The Woodlands will be the 3rd store for this exciting new concept.  It is considered to be a fast casual dining concept and prides itself in using organic or more naturally grown products whenever possible.  Offering a variety of choices like gluten free buns to organic beer, Coal Burger is definitely health conscious.

The burgers will be cooked in a coal fired oven, giving them a natural smokey flavor.  All the beef will be certified organic grass fed and chicken will be hormone and antibiotic free.  Their menu will also include salads and a vegetarian burger.  Specialty drinks will include organic gelato milkshakes and floats, organic beer and wine, and regular cane cola.

Coal Burger’s “Eat Green and Live Green” motto should be a great fit here in The Woodlands TX.  This will be a nice addition to the many unique dining options we already have in the Town Center.

Bucees Madisonville TX

If your planning a road trip north on I-45 in the near future, you should consider stopping off in Madisonville Texas.  Bucees opened their largest store yet in May 2009 and this store is quickly becoming a landmark of sorts.  If you’ve never been in a Bucees, you’re missing out.

Bucees has some of the largest convenient stores in the State.  The Madisonville store does not cater to commercial truck drivers, but rather to travelers  along I-45.  They have a wide offering ranging from jerky, fudge, Dippin Dots, fresh deli, specialty sauces, and much more.  Everyone raves about how clean their bathrooms are.

Before the Madisonville store opened, the Luling location was their flagship located between Houston and San Antonio along I-10.  The Madisonville store is located just over an hour north of The Woodlands TX, at the Hwy 21 exit.  This new mega store has created a lot of new jobs in town, starting quite the buzz.  Madisonville TX real estate is very diverse, with many acreage size properties for sale.

Many people in The Woodlands have already found this spot.  Bucee’s mascot is a beaver and you can see his face all over town.  People in The Woodlands proudly wear the Bucees t-shirts and display their beaver bumper stickers.  So next time your headed to Dallas, make sure you stop off and see what all this beaver madness is about.
